AGES and MedUni Vienna strengthen cooperation

18.03.2025

Against the background of increasing challenges in the area of One Health, the Rector of the Medical University of Vienna, Markus Müller, and the Managing Directors of AGES, Johannes Pleiner-Duxneuner and Anton Reinl, have signed a co-operation agreement. The aim is to pool scientific and technological expertise in order to contribute to solving global health problems.

New pathogens, previously rare pathogens that are increasingly emerging, new vectors that can transmit pathogens, pathogens that are increasingly resistant to antibiotics, and the increase in noncommunicable diseases and their prevention are the major challenges in the One-Health area. In addition, there is know-how in clinical research, as well as the development and approval of drugs and medical devices.

The Medical University of Vienna (MedUni) and AGES, the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety, are therefore strengthening their cooperation: "In times of increasing global health risks, strong partnerships are particularly important for advancing research, teaching and innovation. Through this cooperation, we are not only strengthening Vienna as a research location, but above all, we are making a decisive contribution to public health," emphasizes Markus Müller, Rector of the Medical University of Vienna, on the occasion of the signing of the cooperation agreement between AGES and MedUni Vienna. "In view of the challenges ahead, it makes sense for us to use our scientific and technological expertise for joint research and development work," says Johannes Pleiner-Duxneuner, Managing Director of AGES.

In particular, the collaboration is intended to ensure the efficient use of the resources available to the contractual partners. The focus is on improving the opportunities for utilizing the joint results of the work as well as on supporting scientists at the beginning of their careers. These goals are to be pursued primarily through master's theses, diploma theses, dissertations or PhD theses, but also through lecturing, joint scientific publications, courses, University Courses and endowed professorships.

The joint activities also aim to strengthen Vienna and Austria as a location for (clinical) studies. There are also plans for increased cooperation in pandemic research and the development of strategies to combat them. This could involve, for example, the joint use of high-security laboratories, as well as the networking and joint use of health data.
