MedUni Vienna receives highest status as Center of Excellence for Medical Mycology

22.11.2023

Diamond status for special expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of invasive fungal infections

The Division of Clinical Microbiology at the Department of Laboratory Medicine and the Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at MedUni Vienna's Department of Medicine I have been jointly awarded the highest status (Diamond Status) as a Center of Excellence for Medical Mycology by the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM). An ECMM Excellence Center (ECMM EC) with Diamond status has special expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of invasive fungal infections, is part of an international cooperation network and actively conducts high-quality research in the field of medical mycology.

Acute and chronic fungal diseases are often life-threatening. Timely diagnosis and treatment options are particularly complex. A growing range of diagnostic tests, methods for detecting resistance and antifungal agents contribute to this complexity. According to the epidemiological definition, most invasive fungal infections are rare diseases. This means that there is a lack of broad-based knowledge to diagnose these diseases rapidly and treat patients in a targeted manner.

The close cooperation between the doctors in the Division of Clinical Microbiology and the Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine makes it possible to remedy this situation and quickly identify and successfully treat invasive fungal infections. The ECMM auditors were also impressed by the high level of expertise and the excellent cooperation between the two departments.

Both departments offer advice and information on the occurrence of invasive fungal infections, participate in international research, support training in this sector and thus make an important contribution to public health.
