MedUni Vienna: Ursula Schmidt-Erfurth receives the City of Vienna Prize 2023
Ursula Schmidt-Erfurth, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at MedUni Vienna, has been awarded the City of Vienna Prize 2023 in the Medical Sciences category.
City Councillor for Culture and Science Veronica Kaup-Hasler presented the awards at a ceremony in the ballroom of Vienna City Hall, also on behalf of the Mayor. The prizes of the City of Vienna have been awarded since 1947 for outstanding achievements in the fields of architecture, fine arts, media art, literature, music, journalism, science and popular education in recognition of artistic and scientific work to date.
Ursula Schmidt-Erfurth is Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at the Medical University of Vienna. She founded the Vienna Study Center (VSC), which serves as a research center for multicenter clinical studies, as well as the Vienna Reading Center (VRC), a world-leading facility for digital retinal imaging. Schmidt-Erfurth is a leading expert in the field of ophthalmology and a pioneer of digital medicine. Numerous groundbreaking research findings and publications have contributed to new insights in medicine and ophthalmology. Schmidt-Erfurth has been a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2018.

The prizes of the City of Vienna
The prizes of the City of Vienna are awarded annually for outstanding achievements in the fields of architecture, fine arts, media art, literature, music, journalism, science and popular education. Established in 1947, the award is a tribute to a lifetime's work and emphasizes the importance of Vienna as a vibrant place of science and culture. The prizes are endowed with 10,000 euros each. The award winners are recommended by independent, regularly changing expert juries.
