Shanghai University Ranking: MedUni Vienna second best domestic university

16.08.2023

Renowned research-oriented ranking with strong US dominance

The Medical University of Vienna has continued to establish itself as the second best domestic university behind the University of Vienna in the recently published "Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities" with its placement in the 201-300 ranks. The Shanghai ranking places particular emphasis on research performance.

The University of Vienna is the only Austrian university in the top 200, ranking 101-150. Five Austrian universities made it into the top 500 this time.

The Shanghai ranking is strongly research-oriented and is based primarily on publicly available databases. Forty percent of the evaluation is based on the quality of the scientists at the respective institution (evaluated by the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners working there as well as the number of highly cited researchers) and the research output (measured by publications in the magazines "Science" and "Nature" as well as citations). Ten percent of the evaluation is based on the quality of education (measured by the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners among graduates) and productivity per researcher.

The current "Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities" continues to be dominated by US universities, with 15 of the 20 universities at the top of the ranking. Harvard University was named the world's best university for the 21st time in a row, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/MIT (all USA). The best European university is once again the University of Cambridge (Great Britain) in 4th place, followed by Berkeley, Princeton and - as the second British university in the top 10 - Oxford in 7th place. The best continental European university is once again the University of Paris-Saclay (15th place), followed by ETH Zurich (20th).
